The figure I’d spoken to earlier—Elias, as I’d thought—was skulking a bit behind Retia. His flames weren’t anywhere near as bright as hers despite sharing the same coloration, and I was unsurprised to find him a bit weaker.

{Elias Darkflame} (Level 18 Elemental) (Elite)

HP: 6,500/6,500

MP: 8,000/8,000

The space beyond the two figures was strange: I’d expected us to be walking into a heavily developed subterranean city, but they appeared to have left the cavern completely untouched, choosing instead to live among its bubbling pools and the natural caves that many of its denizens were now peering out of.

The ceiling was the most remarkable part: it was a labyrinth of chains that were bound so tightly together that I couldn’t tell where one started and another ended.

But instead of being fully aglow, the light and heat appeared to be transferring from one massive link to the next, moving through the chain in waves. Hundreds of the links were lit up at once, and watching it seep through and along was incredibly hypnotic.

Sweat trickled down my forehead and threatened to drip into my eyes, so I rubbed my face with my sleeve and averted my gaze.

“Health is starting to fall again,” Frank said. “Couple points a second.”

That didn’t surprise me—it felt like we were standing in a furnace.

“Thanks.”

Retia moved in my direction, and my Health began to fall more quickly, dropping a few percentage points before one of House’s bots appeared overhead and canceled it out.

“So you spoke to Igor. What news do you have of him? How did he get out?” She paused. “He’s truly still alive?”

I faked a cough to buy some time. Retia’s rapid-fire questions had given me the same impression that Igor had up above: that I might be better off not revealing that I was the one who had freed him, even though it hadn’t had anything to do with the fire mage on a personal level.

“Careful,” Frank whispered. Which was all the confirmation I needed to play it cool.

“The blue tower fell, and the others turned off,” I said. “All three members of the Triad are out.”

“Turned off?” Elias said. “What do you mean, turned off?”

I kept my eyes on Retia. “They’re no longer active. So the mages that powered them were free to leave.” I studied the elemental’s face, trying to gauge her response to the news and coming up completely empty.

“I see. Elias will see you out through the back entrance.” She turned her back on me and made for one of the dark entryways while another circular door in the rear of the space rumbled and slid open.

I went after her. “Hold on a second. Don’t you at least want to hear what he had to say? He’s about to blow this whole place sky-high.”

She shrugged and kept walking away. “Even if he makes good on his threat, it makes no difference to us. If what you said is true, then the Possibility King has returned, and the world has already ended. I can’t fault Igor for wanting revenge.
